GRAY CRAG
Height: 2293', (699m)  (Wainwright has the summit as  2286': see below)
Grid Ref: NY 427119

Gray Crag is essentially a narrow grassy ridge which runs north for over a mile from Thornthwaite Crag. The usually accepted summit is the cairn at 698m at the northern end of the ridge. This is the Wainwright summit, though the OS map shows a slightly higher 699m spot a little to the south, just outside the National Trust boundary which obscures broken wall (Personally, I'd rather not have such boundaries marked on walking maps, preferring them to show more tangible details on the ground rather than abstract political features). There is also a subsidiary top halfway along the ridge towards Thornthwaite Crag which could be mistaken for Gray Crag's summit when coming from that direction in mist.

GREY CRAG
Height: 2093', (638m)
Grid Ref: NY 497072

Sometimes known as Sleddale Fell, Grey Crag is the most easterly of the Wainwrights, and it's rare to see people on the Shap Fells to the east. However, it's an excellent area for anyone wanting a bit of solitude, especially on a Bank holiday weekend. The climbing is never too strenuous.

A few hundred yard north east of Grey Crag's cairn is the summit of Harrop Pike, only a metre less in height. It's probably more often visited as part of the Bannisdale Horseshoe, though the beeline from Gray Crag isn't very tempting as the ground is quite marshy.

Greycrag Tarn, marked on the map, is little more than a marshy depression between the summit and Tarn Crag

HARTSOP DODD
Height: 2028', (618m)
Grid Ref: NY 412118

Hartsop Dodd is situated at the end of a short ridge which runs north from Stoney Cove Pike. A dry-stone wall (annoyingly obscured by a National Trust boundary on the OS map) runs along the ridge and across the summit, making a useful handrail feature in mist. Deer can often be seen grazing in the quiet valleys either side of the ridge.
